Maream-Jena Nabut
Women of
Society, a term we have long been hearing and reading of. These women are
mostly from Europe or America, and rarely do we hear of Arab women of such.
However, not hearing about these women does not mean they do not exist as they
are many all over the Arab world. In Palestine, they are many, who are on the
top of the national and social pyramid. Their work spans from charity to
putting a smile on children’s
faces, with no political affiliations or agenda.
They do not
brag about their posts or jobs, as the sole reason for having them is for the
greater good of the
society and people. Waking early in the morning and staying
up long into the hours of the night for the sake of accomplishing the
responsibilities she was entrusted with to serve the Palestinian citizen. You
would find her by the mother of a martyr, helping her through grief, next to
the mother of a prisoner, helping her find patience. These women are always
looking to help and lend a hand and support. These women give their warmth and
compassion to orphans, and would check on those who had suffered from the snow
storm. She is a mother, sister, daughter friend and colleague. Who are we
talking about? It is Doctor Laila Ghannam,
Ramallah and Al-Birahs’s governor.
Each refugee
camp, village and city recognizes the efforts of Dr. Ghannam, her efforts and
actions speak for themselves. She has helped and been there with her national
efforts against the Israeli occupation, becoming a role model for every
Palestinian female and even the Arab females, to always work towards their
ambitions and goals they set no matter how hard they may be and no matter what
the obstacles they may find.
I'm not
trying to just say pretty words about her, I say what I feel and not for
serving my own interests. I have not met her and am in no need of any
assistance or aid. All that I have said is honest from what I have seen and
heard her do. Just seeing all that she does to make a difference inspires and
motivates me to do the same and put a smile on someone’s face. She has taught
us honesty, hard work, being giving and working for the greater good. So thank
you Dr. Laila Ghannam for everything you do and represent.
